House of Hashim by Wahti Mahidin
Excerpt from TELL magazine, first issue, march 2007
In times when young ‘uns cannot wait to be liberated from whatever traditions are perceived to be shackling them to an archival image, its refreshing to hear twenty something Natasha Hashim nonchalantly reasoning, “its good to maintain the family name so that in future it will be easy to trace the family tree and keep in touch with family members.”
From young Natasha had been inculcated with a sense of pride in belonging to an illustrious family. “My dad used to remind me to behave well especially when we went out,” those reminders running along the lines of , “you carry the name Hashim and you have a good family background.”
I googled this earlier, thought I'd put it back: http://macamnilah.blogspot.com/2005/11/hamid-khan-my-grandfather.html

I found him at last .. more specifically, writings about him. I finally borrowed newspaper cuttings of his funeral from my uncle Nizam Khan. I will retype the news clips here:
Jefferi Mahmud Hashim reports:
Proud to announce the newest addition to the Hashim clan. Sean Hashim (we haven't decided on a middle name yet) came out screaming yesterday morning, 4th March 2007. He tipped the scale at 2.89kgs. Both mum and baby are doing fine, we'll be at Gleneagles Room 310 till omorrow morning.
Congratulations. The new addition has been added to the family tree.

IN December 1955, I left for England on board the SS Canton of the P&O Line, a passenger ship which regularly plied between the East and West. The voyage was to take 18 days. This was the normal mode of travelling to England at the time.
When I left the Kuala Lumpur Railway Station for the journey to Singapore by train to join the ship there, I also left behind all pretensions of having been a magistrate and assumed the role of a student going abroad to further his studies. In life, one has to be practical and not rest on past laurels, to do one’s best in the present with hopes for the future.
“The only guide to a man is his conscience;
the only shield to his memory is the rectitude
and sincerity of his actions. With this shield,
however the fates may play, we march
always in the ranks of honour.”
– Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965), former British Prime Minister
“Thou art not for the fashion of these times, Where none will sweat but for promotion.” These words in William Shakespeare’s As You Like It aptly describes the manner in which Tan Sri Dato’ Harun Mahmud Hashim (Harun) has gone about doing the things he does. Selflessly, honourably, ethically, with no thought of reward for himself or his family. The fact that he chose, after retirement from the judiciary in 1994, to take up an academic position at the International Islamic University is testimony to Harun’s impeccable character. Many others would have chosen a lucrative appointment as chairman of some corporation or other.
Great job guys who started this monumental effort, especially to Abg Hilmy. What started off as a conversation (or a dream) has now become reality. Its funny how fate has now brought (or aims to) bring us together. My story with another was quite funny. It satrted with a mutual friend who introduced me to this chap, and it went something like this, "Zainul this is Darhim, Darhim this is Zainul, you dont know it but you are cousins". This was when we were in University, and has lasted for some time and countless girlfriends (now wives). Its rings true the saying that 6 degrees of seperation brings you back to square 1. This chance encounter, has brought me into contact with more like-minded Hashims (you'd better believe it, we are all over the place) and friendships through the bond of blood have made.
